Last Saturday, I had a chance to do a tasting at Brussels Bistro in Laguna Beach. I went a fellow blogger I went a fellow blogger Trinh who loves food just as much as I.who loves food just as much as I. It was an absolutely gorgeous day with a slight breeze. I tell you this because when you are dining on the patio of this quaint bistro it makes for the perfect backdrop for an awesome meal.
The super friendly waitress approached us, so sweet, asked us if we wanted drinks and went over all the daily specials. Everything sounded so good and we hadn't even seen the menu yet. After mulling over our options, we decided on the following...
Escargot and the beef croquettes for our appetizers. The garlic and wine mussels and the steak fries for the entrees and the sugar tart with coffee ice cream for dessert.
The escargot was garlicky, buttery and down right delicious. The bitter ballen (beef croquettes) we're crispy outside and almost creamy inside. It was served with a mustard Dijon sauce that paired perfectly.
For the entrees the muscles came in a large black pot. When the waiter opened the lid, a cloud of steam escaped and you could smell the yummy garlic and wine. We asked for extra bread to dip. We needed something to soak up all that deliciousness. The steak came with a small salad with a light refreshing vinaigrette. We requested the steak at a medium and it came pretty well done. The flavor was fine but the texture was off and a little troublesome to slice. I probably wouldn't order it again as there are so many other options to choose from. Both entrees came with their Brussels frites (fries), they were golden brown...crispy on the outside and perfectly salted and soft on the inside. Deeeelicious!
The dessert course was the biggest surprise of the day. It was called a sugar tart and although it was sweet, it won't give you a toothache. The pastry was crisp and almost had a slight caramelization on the outside while the coffee ice cream was rich and flavorful.
The inside of the restaurant has recently gone under a makeover. Its very cozy with brick walls and a long bar which includes a large cocktail selection and of course specialty beers. I wouldn't suggest a super large party here unless pre-arranged, but being only a few yards from the beach, definitely a great date spot. Make sure you stop at the back wall and take a picture with your favorite someone. It makes a great back drop. You'll want to come back. I know I do.
Thanks again for coming with me Trinh !!!
