Luis' Butcher shop has a killer restaurant inside!

Updated: Aug 23, 2019

Located in an old strip mall a few minutes away from downtown Downey, this is so much more than just a butcher shop. Started in 1990, once owned by Luis himself, Luis' Butcher Shop is now owned and operated by his two children Rosa and Moises. They've painted, they've added a new counter at the restaurant but most importantly, they've made this a neighborhood staple. A go to for quality meats and take out.

If you didn't know any better, you would think you could only buy butchered meat here, but No! It's a butcher shop, a mini grocery store, and a restaurant! OK, it's not a sit down restaurant, but it does have a counter and serves a huge menu for take out. Crazy thing is...even with everything going on...the food here is amazing! Like really AMAZING! The day I came, it was pour down rain, and it wasn't stopping anyone from coming it. I couldn't be how crowded it was getting at 11:30 on a Saturday.

When you first walk in you'll see the produce section which is quite extensive and several rows of dry goods.

As you walk towards the back of the store you'll see the butcher shop. The meat here is gorgeous. The color is red, not pale or grey like the grocery store. The marinades are vibrant, the sausages are STUFFED and those ribeyes!!! Man, I'm drooling just thinking about it!

My first time every having Pazole and I have been craving it every day since I had it! The broth is flavorful, the hominy is soft but not mushy, and the pork is so tender it is falling off the bone. Just incredible! Perfect for the winter!

You know that term "fork tender"? This chicken mole is so tender that it literally falls off the bone when you are picking it up. The mole itself has so much depth of flavor. I can't describe how good this is! But does SOOOOO GOOOD help?

I'm a little sad that the picture of these short ribs does not convey the true beauty of how good this meat was. Had so much flavor but it was tender. I literally could have eaten 4 or 5 of these delicious suckers! And the rice was really good also!

Standard Carne Asada tacos? NO! These were overflowing with flavorful meat and that green salsa had so much flavor! They can be purchased a la cart or in a combo with rice and beans.

So lets talk about this chipotle brisket sandwich. The brisket has been braised for 18 hours in a medley of seasonings and spices. Then placed on fresh toasted rolls with a chipotle salsa, melted chedar cheese and an avocado spread. The entire sandwich has soooo much flavor and melts in your mouth. AMAZING! Protip, try this brisket in a burrito! As you can tell, I was a huge fan. I love the mom & pop shop vibe with super fresh ingredients. It honestly feels like you're eating at your Tia's house. The prices are really inexpensive for the quality and portion size. If you have a "must try" list like I do, put this one on it. You won't regret it! Luis Butcher Shop
