Nighthawk isn't just a breakfast bar
Nighthawk was inspired by the late-night rock 'n' roll breakfast in LA, where musicians and groupies a like would end their nights eating in diners at the end of their shows on the Sunset Strip. This isn't the Sunset Strip, but its just as cool. Located on Washington Blvd in the city of Venice Beach, Nighthawk has been turning both local and hipster heads for the last two years. The restaurant is small but casually sophisticated. A white wallpaper at the front entrance leads to you to hostess stand. Just beyond, the walls get black and are outlined with chalk writing. There's a buzz when you walk in of happy chatter and the music is old school hip-hop and other nostalgic hits. I was singing the entire time I was there. Its awesome. The customers ranged on the Benetton Flag from pretty preppy boys sitting at the bar and a disco diva sitting at the table next to us. Two tables away there was a couple from Tennessee that read about Nighthawk on Thrillist and had to stop since they were in California on vacation. I loved the diversity.
The menu is super elevated old school breakfast. French toasted tossed in rice krispies, Tapito brown sugar bacon, Eggs Benedict french fries, Chicken and Biscuits with a gravy the rivals crack cocaine. Its that good and it'll keep you coming back for more. You can definitely taste the quality of the locally sourced ingredients. Everything is made from scratch and made in house. Scroll through the pictures below to see what I had on my visit. Its hard to say what my favorite was...no, its not that hard. It was definitely the chicken and biscuits. Which leads me to bring up a few Pro Tips. One, almost all the food here has some spice. Nothing is going to burn your tongue, but you're going to feel it in the back of your throat. If you absolutely cannot tolerate spice then order a side of fries and a Tango Mimosa, but you're friends are going to keep eating. Two, there are no substitutions, modifications or additions. The menu was very well thought out and unless there is an allergy they won't change it for you. Three, the drinks are a bit pricey, but they are STRONG. They will sneak up on you and are worth the price you are paying for them. If you're a light weight bring a designated driver or take an uber home.
I loved this place. If I lived closer, I would definitely be here more often. However, I'll be back soon. I can't wait to try the steak and eggs and the Hashtag Crab Toast, the Foie Gras scrambled duck eggs and the Breakfast Burger. Mmmm. So good!
